Safety concerns have finally caught up with Walgreens at the corner of 27th Street and North Avenue in Midtown Milwaukee. The store is set to close for good on June 23, with the company saying ongoing security problems have made it impossible to keep operating. Customers can continue to refill and pick up prescriptions at the North Avenue location through that date. After June 23, all pharmacy files will be transferred to another Walgreens on Wisconsin Avenue.

Walgreens' statement

In a statement to WISN 12 News, a Walgreens spokesperson put it plainly: "Protecting our customers and team members remains our top priority, and despite our actions and investments in private security, persistent safety challenges at our North Avenue store do not allow us to operate sustainably." The company said it will keep its other Milwaukee locations open and continue working with law enforcement and community partners to create safer retail environments across the city.

Where prescriptions will go

After the doors close on North Avenue, customers will not have to start from scratch with a new pharmacy. Walgreens said prescriptions will automatically move to its Miller Valley store at 3522 W. Wisconsin Ave, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The paper also reports that patients from the closing store will qualify for free prescription delivery for 90 days. Per Walgreens, customers can manage auto-refills and delivery options online or by calling a nearby Walgreens pharmacy.

Past incidents at the site

The safety problems at 27th and North are not theoretical. Local coverage of a fatal shooting at the store, which left an employee dead and forced the location to close while police investigated, highlighted the kind of violent incidents the chain points to as part of its decision, according to TMJ4. Police described the shooting as a suspected domestic-violence incident and said the store stayed closed while investigators gathered evidence.

Local impact and the national picture

Neighborhood leaders and residents have voiced worries that losing another local pharmacy will make life harder for people who rely on nearby drugstores for medications and basic necessities, a theme that has surfaced repeatedly in local reporting. The Midtown closure also fits into a bigger corporate retrenchment. Walgreens has rolled out a plan to trim its store footprint and shut down hundreds of underperforming locations over several years, a strategy that translated into roughly 450 closures in 2025, according to USA TODAY. As lost several Walgreens locations coverage has already noted, Milwaukee has seen multiple Walgreens stores shut their doors in recent years, leaving some neighborhoods with fewer pharmacy options and longer trips for routine care.
