San Jose woke up today to a cool, partly cloudy start, with Mineta San Jose International reporting temperatures near 55°F and plenty of low-level moisture in the air. Those gray morning skies will not last, though. Low clouds are expected to thin by late morning, setting up a mostly sunny afternoon for most neighborhoods with a high near 70°F. Winds start off light, then turn a bit friskier in the usual wind-prone spots later in the day. By tonight, temperatures slide back into the low 50s.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
By the afternoon, winds turn northwesterly, generally around 1 to 9 mph across the valley floor, but stronger through gaps and higher terrain. Interior corridors such as the Salinas Valley and the higher East Bay elevations are expected to feel it more than downtown San Jose, with the forecast discussion calling for gusts up to about 25 mph in those exposed zones. If you are planning a hike along ridgelines or an afternoon at a hilltop park, expect it to feel cooler and windier than the numbers suggest.
Weekend Warm-Up
The cool, marine-influenced finish to the workweek gives way to a steady warm-up. Tomorrow is projected to top out near 75°F, followed by a more noticeable jump next Sunday, May 31, with highs around 83°F. The trend continues into next Monday, June 1, when temperatures are expected to reach about 87°F as a weak ridge builds over the region. Overnight lows, however, should stay on the cool side in the low to mid 50s, so mornings will remain crisp even as afternoons turn decidedly warm. Current guidance indicates conditions will remain mostly dry through early next week.
Boaters And Beachgoers Watch The Water
Out on the water, it is a different story. Small Craft Advisories are in place for parts of Monterey Bay and other coastal waters from tomorrow afternoon into next Sunday evening. Mariners should be prepared for gusty northerly winds and rough, choppy seas and factor that into any weekend plans. Check the National Weather Service for zone-specific timing and detailed marine conditions.
What This Means For Your Friday
For most of San Jose, today shapes up as a classic jacket in the morning, sunglasses by lunch kind of day. Look for patchy fog or low clouds through about 9 to 10 AM, followed by a mostly sunny afternoon and a mild evening commute. If your route cuts through low-lying stretches along the bayfront, give yourself a few extra minutes early on in case visibility is reduced. A light layer will still come in handy after sunset. For weekend outdoor plans, count on warmer afternoons, but keep breezy conditions in mind if you will be spending time in exposed spots like hilltops, ridgelines, or open parks.
