A small single-engine plane crashed on the grounds of South Florida State Hospital near North Perry Airport on Friday, flipping onto its back on the campus and drawing a major police and fire response. Pembroke Pines police said everyone on board was conscious and breathing, and Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue later confirmed that two adults were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital as trauma patients. Crews also reported a small fuel leak that was quickly contained as investigators moved in to document the scene. Authorities had not released a cause as of Friday afternoon.
Scene and response
Sky 10 footage showed the aircraft upside down on the South Florida State Hospital campus at 800 E. Cypress Drive around 11:45 a.m., according to WPLG Local 10. Pembroke Pines police told the station that traffic nearby was not expected to be affected and that no additional injuries were reported.
Injuries and official detail
The Federal Aviation Administration told local reporters the plane went down shortly after departing North Perry Airport. Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue said crews found two injured adults who were rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, per CBS Miami. The station identified the aircraft as a single-engine Cessna C172P and reported that firefighters mitigated a minor fuel leak while securing the wreckage. Emergency personnel remained on scene into the afternoon as the first round of questions got underway.
Neighborhood concerns
The crash lands amid simmering community concern over North Perry, which neighbors say has seen a troubling run of incidents in recent years. WLRN covered a packed town hall last year where residents pushed officials for safety and environmental studies, including testing for lead pollution near the airport. Hoodline has already chronicled a July 2025 crash in Pembroke Pines that hospitalized four people, a reminder of why some neighbors continue to call for tighter oversight; see Four Hospitalized After Crash.
What’s next
Investigators have not yet said what brought the Cessna down and have promised more information as the case develops, CBS Miami noted. For now, officials are asking residents to steer clear of the immediate area while emergency crews finish their work and investigators gather evidence.
