A man was found fatally shot late Saturday morning in the 8000 block of South Marquette Avenue in Chicago’s South Chicago neighborhood, adding another grim entry to a growing list of shootings on the Far South Side.
Officers discovered the victim around 11:45 a.m. with gunshot wounds to the side and chest, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police said his age was not immediately known and that no arrests had been reported as detectives continued to investigate.
The slaying is the latest violent incident in South Chicago this month, and neighbors say it is wearing on them. On May 22, a 13-year-old boy was shot in the head in the neighborhood and rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, as reported in coverage of the 13-year-old shot in head. After that shooting, detectives canvassed nearby blocks for witnesses and surveillance video.
Police Response and Investigation
Chicago police have not released the man’s identity or a possible motive in the Marquette Avenue killing. Detectives are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, and authorities said the man was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. No arrests had been announced as of Saturday.
Neighbors and Recent Trend
Residents say the area has felt increasingly unsettled by a series of shootings across South Chicago this spring. One of the most recent incidents came on May 29, when a 12-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. That case was reported by CBS Chicago, which noted that Area Two detectives were investigating and that no arrests had been made.
The Marquette Avenue homicide remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional details.
