Indianapolis is waking up to a mostly clear, muggy start, with temperatures in the mid-60s at Indianapolis International Airport and dew points hovering in the same range that make it feel a bit swampy already. Humidity is running high and winds are light for now, but that calm will not last as a front moves in later today.
Afternoon Storms and Gusty Winds
Showers and thunderstorms are likely after noon Tuesday, with a high near 84°F. South-southwest winds of 10 to 17 mph will ramp up through the day and could gust up to 30 mph. That is strong enough for brief, wind-driven downed branches and the potential for short power interruptions when stronger cells roll through.
Evening Flooding Risk
The main concern arrives from late afternoon into the evening, when more organized storms could deliver damaging wind gusts and pockets of heavy rain. New rainfall totals of one half to three quarters of an inch are possible overnight. Forecasters note that soils are already saturated from widespread 1.5 to 3+ inches of recent rain, which raises the risk of localized flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service.
How To Plan
Build in extra time for afternoon and evening travel, and secure or bring inside any loose outdoor items before the storms flare up. If you are heading through IND or relying on transit, check for delays, keep your phone charged for weather alerts, and be ready to move outdoor plans under a roof.
