Texas Target stores are in for a serious glow-up this year, with a dozen locations across the state slated for upgrades that put groceries and pickup convenience front and center. Shoppers can expect reworked layouts, brighter LED lighting, expanded grocery and grab-and-go areas, and more room dedicated to order pickup.
Companywide, Target is putting roughly $5 billion on the table this year to refresh more than 130 stores and open about 30 new locations as part of what it calls its largest store transformation in a decade, according to Target. “These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop,” Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president of Target Properties, said in a statement. The company says floor plans will be overhauled, lighting updated, and space and staffing expanded to speed up order pickup.
Which Texas Targets Are On The List?
San Antonio is firmly on the map. Two city stores are part of the 2026 upgrade roster, and Texas has more remodels scheduled than any other state, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The paper reports that additional remodels are planned this year in San Marcos, McAllen, Dallas, El Paso, Galveston, Houston, and Temple. Local shoppers may notice work hitting different regions on staggered timelines as projects roll through various markets over the course of the year.
Permits show work is already in the pipeline
State project filings indicate the Southeast Military Drive Target is registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and lists an estimated renovation cost of about $4.17 million. The S.W. Military Drive store also has active TDLR records for interior and site work, including a drive-up expansion. These permit pages show staggered start and completion windows that vary by project and scope, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
What shoppers will actually see
Across the chain, many remodels will carve out more space for groceries, with about 50% more new food and drink items and a roughly 20% boost in vitamin and nutrition offerings, upgrades that rolled out in April as part of Target's strategic plan. Stores are also slated for refreshed lighting, clearer signage, and additional square footage devoted to Order Pickup, Drive Up, and Express Self-Checkout. For everyday shoppers, that should translate into fuller shelves in key categories and faster pickup lanes when things get busy.
Why it matters in Texas
Retail analysts say a stronger grocery game sits at the heart of Target’s turnaround strategy and helps the chain compete in markets where shoppers expect serious supermarket selection. As Supermarket News reported, making stores more grocery-forward can boost both traffic and order volume, a particular advantage in Texas, where homegrown players like H-E-B set a high bar for fresh and prepared foods. Local Target regulars can expect new displays and a broader Good & Gather lineup as renovations land.
Work is expected to continue through 2026, with some locations undergoing phased projects that keep stores open while interiors are refitted. Shoppers who want to know whether their neighborhood Target is on the upgrade schedule can check the company’s store locator or call their local store for timing details and any temporary service changes.
