El Paso is waking up to clear skies and temperatures near 79 degrees Wednesday, but the easygoing start will give way to a punishing afternoon. The high is expected to reach 103 degrees, with a Heat Advisory covering parts of the Rio Grande Valley through 9 p.m.
The National Weather Service says the advisory runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday for the Rio Grande Valley of eastern El Paso and western Hudspeth counties. Skies will remain sunny, with heat index values as high as 98 and east-southeast winds around 3 to 7 mph.
The Heat Builds Through Midafternoon
Temperatures should climb through the 90s by late morning, reach about 98 degrees around early afternoon, and peak near 103 degrees between 4 and 6 p.m. Rain chances are essentially zero in El Paso on Wednesday, and lowland humidity is expected to fall into the lower teens.
Wednesday night will stay warm, with partly cloudy skies and a low around 79 degrees. The heat index could remain as high as 97 during the evening, so conditions may not feel much better immediately after sunset.
A Small Cooldown Still Leaves Triple Digits
Thursday will bring another sunny, 101-degree day, followed by a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. The National Weather Service expects more moisture to move into the region Thursday, raising storm chances across parts of the mountains and lowlands.
Friday through Sunday will be slightly cooler but still hot, with highs near 99 degrees and mostly sunny skies in El Paso. Monday and Tuesday are forecast to reach about 98 degrees, with slight chances for overnight showers and thunderstorms early next week.

People spending time outside Wednesday should limit strenuous activity during the afternoon, drink water regularly and check on older adults, children and pets. Never leave anyone in a parked vehicle, even for a short errand, as vehicle interiors can heat up dangerously fast.
