Andy’s Pizza is pulling into Union Station, taking over the longtime Sbarro storefront at 50 Massachusetts Ave NE and giving one of D.C.’s busiest transit hubs a neighborhood-style slice shop. There is still no confirmed opening date, but the move has already caught the eye of local food watchers and industry press and marks another step in the brand’s rapid regional climb.
Andy’s To Take Over Sbarro’s Union Station Space
According to Axios Washington D.C., owner Andy Brown has secured the Sbarro space at Union Station as part of Andy’s ongoing expansion. The outlet notes that Andy’s now operates 14 locations across the DMV and has built a custom “Andy's OS,” an AI-powered operating system used for forecasting, scheduling and other kitchen decisions. The system helps staff make micro-level calls - from when a pie should go into the oven to inventory decisions - while the chain continues to rely on people to answer phones and work the counters.
Bagels Could Be On Board Too
As reported by WhatNow, a comment on the X account @eat_dc indicates Andy’s plans to bring its relatively new bagel program to the Union Station shop, although the company has not yet released a formal menu. That same report points to 50 Massachusetts Ave NE - the address listed for Sbarro’s Union Station location on Sbarro - as the specific storefront Andy’s is set to occupy.
Growing Footprint Around The DMV
Andy’s has been steadily planting flags across D.C., Maryland and Virginia. ARLnow covered the chain’s Virginia Square opening last year, one of several new locations that have broadened its reach. The brand’s official website and press page outline a mix of storefronts, pop-ups and brewery collaborations that have helped build its following in the region and likely made a high-foot-traffic hub like Union Station an appealing next stop.
Owner Talks AI And Keeping People Up Front
“That's where I see AI going,” Brown told Axios, describing how Andy’s OS supports line cooks and managers behind the scenes. He said the tools have not reduced staffing levels and that customers still deal with human employees instead of kiosks.
Neither Andy’s nor Union Station has announced an official opening date. WhatNow notes there is currently no public timeline. If everything moves ahead as planned, commuters can look forward to neighborhood-style slices - and possibly bagels alongside the pizza - once Andy’s finalizes its Union Station debut.
