A Thursday night dispute on a Washington Heights sidewalk erupted into violence, leaving three people shot and a fourth person slashed in the neck, police said. The clash broke out just before 8 p.m. near Fort Washington Avenue and West 162nd Street, and all four victims were taken to nearby hospitals. The confrontation began on the sidewalk and is still under investigation; police said no arrests have been made.
Victims and injuries
According to ABC7, the injured included a 20-year-old man shot in the leg, a 21-year-old man shot in the foot, an 18-year-old woman shot in the leg, and an 18-year-old man slashed in the neck. Officers responding to 911 calls found the victims on the sidewalk and began rendering aid before emergency crews rushed them to area hospitals. Investigators have not publicly identified any suspects or a possible motive.
Hospitals and condition
ABC7 reports that the male victim of unknown age and both 18-year-old victims were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, while the 20-year-old man was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. Hospital officials told ABC7 the victims are expected to recover. Police said the violence stemmed from a dispute on the street.
Police response and tips
The NYPD said the investigation remains active and that detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage, according to PIX11. Anyone with information or video is urged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit an anonymous tip online. So far, police said, no one has been taken into custody.
Neighborhood context
The shooting comes on the heels of a recent run of violent robberies and slashings in parts of Washington Heights, including an incident earlier this week involving a phone-robbery crew that left two people slashed, according to Hoodline. That uptick has fueled calls from residents for more visible police patrols in upper Manhattan. This story will be updated as the NYPD releases more information.
