A quiet Sunday night in Wonder Lake turned chaotic when a house near the intersection of Birch Drive and East Wonder Lake Drive was ripped apart by what officials are calling an apparent explosion and fire. The home appeared to be destroyed, at least one neighboring residence was damaged, and at least one person was flown from the scene by medical helicopter. McHenry County sheriff's deputies and local fire crews quickly sealed off the neighborhood as investigators moved in.
According to Shaw Local, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office issued an alert at 8:38 p.m. warning residents to stay away from the area while emergency crews worked. Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Chief Matt Yegge confirmed the home had exploded, which drew a sizable multiagency response to the lakeside neighborhood.
As reported by ABC7 Chicago, one house "appeared to be destroyed" and at least one other was visibly damaged. The station also reported that at least one person was airlifted from the scene, with that person's condition still unknown in the early hours of Monday.
The local fire district's contact page lists stations on East Wonder Lake Road and West Thompson Road, which puts firefighters close to the scene of the blast. The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District typically works in tandem with neighboring departments on major incidents in the area, and this time was no exception, as multiple agencies converged to secure the site and protect nearby homes.
Investigation ongoing
Officials said the cause of the apparent explosion and fire remains under investigation, and they had not released any additional details as of Monday morning, according to ABC7 Chicago. Investigators from the sheriff's office and local fire agencies were expected to stay on scene into the day as they worked to determine what triggered the blast.
Impact on neighbors
The Northwest Herald described a heavy police and fire presence in the neighborhood and reported that residents were being told to steer clear while crews worked, per Shaw Local. Officials have not yet released a full casualty count and continue to ask the public to avoid the area so investigators can do their jobs without interference.
