An incarcerated man at Shelby County's main downtown jail died early Wednesday after what officials are calling a medical emergency, renewing questions about safety inside the lockup long known simply as 201 Poplar.
What officials say
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says staff reported a medical emergency around 12:23 a.m., and Memphis Fire Department paramedics took the inmate to Regional One, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Action News 5. The outlet identified the man as 36-year-old Coltral Pondexter and reported that the sheriff's office has opened an in-custody death investigation. Officials have not yet released a cause of death.
Pattern at 201 Poplar
The downtown jail has seen multiple in-custody deaths in recent months and years, a pattern that has drawn increasing scrutiny from families and advocacy groups. The Daily Memphian has documented several of those fatalities and raised questions about staffing levels and the quality of medical care inside the facility, while an autopsy tying a prior 201 Poplar death to a drug overdose was reported by Hoodline in April.
Investigation and next steps
The sheriff's office says Pondexter's death remains under investigation and that the cause is undetermined pending findings from the medical examiner, according to Action News 5. In previous in-custody deaths at 201 Poplar, autopsies and outside reviews have followed, and advocates say families are still pushing for clearer answers about what happened to their loved ones behind bars.
County officials did not immediately provide further comment beyond initial statements given to local media. This story will be updated if additional information is released.
