The high-octane spectacle of the SCORE Baja 500 turned tragic yesterday when a competing motorcyclist died after a serious crash in the Ensenada municipality, authorities said. Medical teams reached the scene and treated the rider, but he was later confirmed dead. Officials have not released the competitor’s name while an investigation remains underway.
What happened
According to SanDiegoRed, preliminary reports indicate the competitor "succumbed to injuries sustained after a violent fall" near Race Mile 324 on the course. On-site medical personnel provided immediate care but were unable to save the rider. Authorities have so far released only limited details as investigators work to piece together what led to the crash.
SCORE and Ensenada officials respond
Race organizers told local media they will not release additional information out of respect for the competitor, his family, and his team and extended condolences, BajaNews reported. Ensenada mayor Claudia Agatón Muñiz echoed those condolences and said municipal, state and federal agencies are coordinating the response and follow-up on the incident, according to local briefings.
Other incidents on the course
A helicopter that had been monitoring the race reportedly crashed in the Ejido Héroes de la Independencia and its occupants were treated and transported by emergency crews, Península BC reported. The same coverage noted several non‑fatal rollovers and minor collisions that were handled by SCORE medical teams. Officials have not tied those incidents to the motorcycle fatality.
What the Baja 500 is
The BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 is a roughly 468.7‑mile desert race based in Ensenada and part of SCORE's World Desert Championship. The 2026 event ran June 3–7 and staged motorcycle starts in the pre‑dawn hours, according to SCORE's official race information. Organizers emphasize controlled access, mandatory tracking devices and an 18‑hour time limit for pro classes, and say course and safety procedures remain under review after any serious incident, as outlined in the race guide.
