A late-afternoon traffic jam at a busy Balch Springs intersection turned deadly when a road rage confrontation ended with a 20-year-old man fatally shot and two brothers now jailed on murder charges.
Family members identified the victim as Jorge Armando Sanchez, a soon-to-be father who relatives say was gunned down as vehicles sat stalled at Peachtree Road and Lake June Road on Sunday, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort-Worth. Sanchez was rushed from the scene and later died at a hospital, relatives told the station. His partner, Yuliana Moreno, said she learned she was pregnant only after the shooting, and a family member, Evelyn Sanchez, told NBC 5 he had been struck about 11 times and called the killing "unjustified."
What police say the video shows
Balch Springs police told CBS News Texas that officers were dispatched around 2:55 p.m. on Sunday after multiple calls about gunfire at the Peachtree and Lake June intersection.
According to the arrest affidavit and witness video described by CBS, a black Chevy pickup was allegedly seen driving aggressively toward a white Dodge Ram before the two drivers got out and started fighting. Investigators say the passenger in the Chevy, identified as Daniel Mora, then pulled a handgun and fired multiple shots.
Detectives said automated license plate reader data helped them track the pickup, leading officers to a residence where they executed a search warrant and recovered a firearm they believe was used in the shooting.
Family reaction
Relatives described Sanchez to NBC 5 as a protector who tried to keep others safe, even in his final moments. Moreno told the station that shortly before the shooting, he sent her a last message saying, "I'ma just make sure that those guys don't follow me. I love you, and I'll see you when you get out of work." She later found out she was pregnant after his death.
Family members have urged anyone who recorded the confrontation or its aftermath to share their footage with investigators, saying those videos could be crucial to the case.
Charges and legal status
Police told CBS News Texas that 19-year-old Daniel Mora and 22-year-old Moises Mora have both been charged with murder and are being held in the Dallas County jail.
According to the arrest affidavit cited by CBS, investigators say the brothers drove away from the intersection after the gunfire. A firearm recovered during the search appeared to have blood on it, authorities said.
