A tense afternoon at Wakefield High School on Thursday saw Arlington County's bomb squad and K-9 teams rush to the campus after the school received a telephone threat shortly after dismissal. Students and staff still on site for after-school activities were kept inside while law enforcement searched the building, and families were urged to stay away while officers worked the scene.
Bomb squad and K-9 teams rush in
Arlington County police and firefighters sent the county bomb squad and bomb-sniffing dogs to Wakefield at about 3:45 p.m., according to ARLnow. The report of a telephone threat came in at roughly 3:43 p.m., after regular dismissal, and officials on scene were evaluating how credible the call was while limiting access to the campus.
What Arlington Public Schools told families
In an email to families, Arlington Public Schools said that "Wakefield High School received a telephone threat at approximately 3:43 p.m. today, after student dismissal," and that "Out of an abundance of caution, Arlington Public Schools immediately placed the school in a Secure-the-Building status," as quoted by ARLnow. The message also told families, "Please do not come to the school at this time, as access to the campus is restricted during the investigation." APS said it is working closely with law enforcement and will share updates as appropriate.
What Secure-the-Building means
Secure-the-Building is a safety step used when a threat or hazard is reported outside a school so the building can serve as protection while officials investigate. As described by Fairfax County Public Schools, the protocol typically keeps exterior doors locked and keeps students and staff inside while authorities determine whether there is an active threat. That aligns with why Wakefield stayed locked while bomb-sniffing teams checked the campus.
Where Wakefield is and how to follow updates
Wakefield High School is listed at 1325 S. Dinwiddie Street in Arlington, according to the school’s website. Families are being asked to rely on official district channels for information rather than gathering near the campus while the investigation is underway. This story will be updated as Arlington County police or Arlington Public Schools release additional details.
