A pre-dawn, high-speed pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies ended in a violent crash north of Farmington early Thursday, leaving two people hospitalized and a Bonne Terre teen facing a stack of felony charges. The collision snapped a utility pole, shut down part of Flat River Road, and turned a late-night traffic check into a serious criminal case.
According to Daily Journal Online, authorities identified the driver as 19-year-old Richard Emmit Peterson of Bonne Terre. St. Francois County has charged him with aggravated fleeing and second-degree assault. Madison County prosecutors, the paper reports, filed three additional Class E felony counts: resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony, first-degree property damage, and leaving the scene of an accident with more than $1,000 in damage.
Deputies told the paper the vehicle was first checked near County Road 208 at the Castor River crossing in the predawn hours. It was later spotted again in St. Francois County, which is when the pursuit kicked off and multiple agencies joined in.
Missouri Law Raises The Stakes For Fleeing Drivers
Missouri law allows prosecutors to treat dangerous attempts to flee in a vehicle as a felony when a driver knowingly creates a substantial risk of serious injury. That statute has quietly shifted how some local departments approach pursuits, especially when speeds climb and county lines get crossed.
KFMO notes that the law and recent local practice have helped fuel more coordinated, multi-agency responses when chases move from one county to another, as happened in Thursday morning’s incident.
Crash Scene, Injuries And Road Closure
Authorities told Daily Journal Online that the pursuit hit speeds of 80 to 90 mph through Perrine, Aldergate, and along Highway 221 before the car headed north on Flat River Road. The chase ended about two miles north of Farmington when the vehicle crashed, snapping a utility pole and briefly blocking the roadway.
St. Francois County officials said an 18-year-old female passenger was flown to a St. Louis hospital with possible spinal injuries. The 19-year-old driver was taken to a St. Louis hospital with a possible broken leg. The paper reports that the case remains under investigation.
Prosecutors in both Madison and St. Francois counties have now filed charges, and investigators from the sheriff’s offices and the Missouri State Highway Patrol continue to dig into the details. Court dates and additional information had not yet been released as authorities reviewed the case.
