A routine Friday afternoon drive on Highway 111 turned deadly on Cagle Mountain in Sequatchie County, where a head-on collision between an SUV and a tractor-trailer left two people dead and four others hurt, authorities said. The violent crash triggered a major emergency response, shut down the highway in both directions for hours, and brought in medical helicopters as crews worked around mangled vehicles, scattered debris, and damaged utility infrastructure. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into what went wrong.
What investigators say
According to Local 3 News, the wreck happened just after 2 p.m. on State Route 8 near the Cagle Mountain Trading Post, when a Ford Expedition crossed the center line and slammed into a 2017 Mack tractor-trailer. Investigators later identified the two people killed as a 69-year-old woman and a 6-year-old child. Four others were taken to hospitals for treatment. Authorities said the Ford Expedition was carrying five people from Indiana, while the tractor-trailer had a single driver.
Road closures, helicopter response, and outages
Highway 111 was shut down in both directions, and traffic was pushed onto Fredonia Mountain Road while first responders worked the crash scene, SValleyNow reports. At least one LifeForce medical helicopter was dispatched. After the impact, the tractor-trailer went off the roadway and struck a utility pole, knocking out power to some residents on the mountain. Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative told local outlets that crews were sent in to repair the damage and later restored electricity to the affected area.
Investigation and legal status
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash, and THP told Local 3 News there are no pending charges at this time. Troopers said the tractor-trailer driver, a 56-year-old man, was among those injured and received treatment following the collision. Officials say the case remains open as troopers complete their on-scene work and continue reviewing evidence.
What drivers should know
The stretch of State Route 8 that crosses Cagle Mountain is narrow and vulnerable to lengthy backups whenever there is a serious incident, and officials have warned that alternate routes like Fredonia Mountain Road are not built to handle heavy detour traffic. Local coverage has tracked similar truck-related wrecks and crash-related outages on Highway 111 in recent years, underscoring the risks along the ridge route; see earlier reporting by WDEF. Drivers in the area are urged to expect possible slowdowns and follow directions from emergency personnel and utility crews while the investigation and any remaining repair work continue.
