Worcester police rushed to Southold Road on Thursday afternoon after a report that a child had fallen from a window, according to the department. Aerial footage from the scene showed multiple police cruisers and emergency personnel lined up along the block as neighbors gathered nearby. Police said the incident happened around 5:15 p.m., and officials did not immediately release any details about the child’s condition.
As reported by NBC10 Boston, officers and first responders converged on Southold Road, and the station’s aerial video captured the heavy police presence. The outlet noted that no further information was available at the time of publication.
Earlier Worcester fall this spring
This is the latest window-fall incident in Worcester this year. A 4-year-old’s seventh-floor fall was reported in April, and Boston 25 News said that child was later listed in stable condition.
Window falls are common but preventable
Falls from windows send thousands of children to emergency departments every year; a review estimated an average of roughly 5,180 window-fall injuries treated annually in U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2008. That review and safety groups stress prevention. Safe Kids Worldwide points out that window screens are designed to keep bugs out, not children in, and recommends installing window guards or stops and keeping climbable furniture away from sills.
What officials say and how to help
Worcester police said detectives are investigating the incident, and anyone with information can submit an anonymous tip to the WPD Detective Bureau through the department’s tip system. The WPD tip page explains how to text or send information to investigators. For emergencies, officials remind the public to call 911.
