A tense, hours-long standoff in South Elgin on Sunday ended with a 56-year-old man in custody after police say he injured an officer and threatened to shoot responding personnel. Village officials said the man barricaded himself inside a bedroom at a home on Oakwood Lane before Kane County SWAT moved in and took him into custody.
Officers say they arrived shortly after 2:30 p.m. to serve multiple felony warrants and encountered the man, who allegedly resisted, struck an officer and then ran back into the residence while threatening to shoot officers. Negotiators and several law-enforcement agencies converged on the neighborhood, and SWAT ultimately entered the home and detained the suspect without further incident. The Kane County State’s Attorney approved charges against the man, identified by police as Wasfi Farooqui, including aggravated resisting arrest, threatening a public official and two counts of resisting a police officer, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
The Village of South Elgin urged residents to steer clear of the 500 block of Oakwood Lane and the Jim Hansen Park parking lot while a command post was set up, and aerial footage captured a heavy police and fire presence in the area. The village later announced the situation was "resolved safely," as reported by NBC Chicago.
Charges and legal next steps
Farooqui now faces a mix of felony and misdemeanor counts that carry different sentencing ranges under Illinois law. A Class 4 felony such as threatening a public official typically carries a sentence of one to three years in prison, while a Class 3 felony like aggravated resisting arrest can bring two to five years, according to the Illinois Compiled Statutes. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek pretrial detention or pursue additional charges as detectives complete their investigation.
This is not Farooqui’s first high-profile encounter with law enforcement. He was previously arrested after a December 2023 rollover crash in St. Charles and faced charges that included an allegation he tried to gain access to a deputy’s taser during that arrest, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Farooqui remains held at the Kane County jail while the investigation continues, and South Elgin police said they will release additional details when available. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the South Elgin Police Department.
