A tense confrontation in a Sunland Park neighborhood left an elderly man with multiple stab wounds and a 31-year-old woman in jail without bond, according to newly filed court records.
Authorities say Sarai Ortiz was arrested after a June 1 incident on the 100 block of Palma. She is being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center on several felony counts tied to the stabbing.
According to court documents obtained by KVIA, Sunland Park police arrived to find an elderly man on the ground with three stab wounds. He was taken to the University Medical Center of El Paso. The records state that Ortiz admitted stabbing the man, telling officers, "I had to stab him," and said she used a kitchen knife and later discarded it at the house.
Ortiz faces three counts of aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon, one count of attempt to commit a felony — to wit, murder — and one count of tampering with evidence, according to the booking information described in the same court documents.
What the charges mean under New Mexico law
Under New Mexico law, aggravated battery against a household member becomes a felony when the attack involves a deadly weapon, strangulation, or causes great bodily harm. The statute spells out the definitions and potential penalties in NMSA §30-3-16.
The tampering with evidence charge is based on NMSA §30-22-5, which covers situations where someone is accused of hiding, changing, or destroying evidence. The attempt charge is governed by New Mexico's attempt statute, NMSA §30-28-1, which explains how prosecutors can charge and punish attempts to commit serious felonies such as murder.
Police account and investigation
Court papers say officers spoke with the 911 caller, who reported seeing Ortiz outside the home and hearing the elderly victim scream before calling for help. According to those documents, officers did not observe any injuries on Ortiz at the scene.
Investigators later added the tampering with evidence charge after Ortiz admitted discarding the knife, according to the same records reviewed by KVIA.
Next steps in court
Because the arrest and booking occurred in Doña Ana County, the case is expected to proceed through the Third Judicial District Court in Las Cruces for arraignment and any felony hearings. The Third Judicial District maintains calendars and clerk contact information for criminal cases in Doña Ana County.
Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges that mirror or expand on the booking information and will set an arraignment date at the district court level.
Sunland Park Police had not issued a public statement at the time the court records were reported by local media. This story will be updated as additional official information and court filings become available.
