Schnucks has officially started building a much larger grocery store in Creve Coeur, tossing the first ceremonial shovels of dirt on Tuesday at the Olia Village redevelopment. The new market is set to replace the chain’s long-running neighborhood store and serve as a key anchor for the mixed-use project on the former Bayer campus, a move city leaders say will help reshape the Olive Boulevard corridor.
Local TV cameras were rolling as crews began clearing and grading the site. KMOV aired video of the groundbreaking, including the classic gold-shovel moment and early site work just off Olive Boulevard.
The company first rolled out formal plans in August 2025 for an approximately 68,000-square-foot replacement store that will sit next to the current location. Schnucks said the new market will take the place of its existing 36,500-square-foot store at 10650 Olive Boulevard, with teammates transferring over to the new building and additional hiring expected to staff the bigger operation, according to Schnucks.
Site Plan And Timeline
Creve Coeur planning documents show that Lot 1 of Olia Village, a 7.54-acre parcel, is approved for a grocery store and adjacent retail space, and that site preparation and infrastructure work moved forward in FY2026. The city’s FY2027 budget materials peg the store’s opening for “around Thanksgiving 2027” and note that construction will roll out in phases, according to the City of Creve Coeur FY2027 budget document.
Olia Village And The Bigger Picture
Developers are pitching Olia Village as a 96-acre, multi-phase transformation of the former Bayer west campus, with apartments, townhomes, office space and roughly 400,000 square feet of commercial space in the mix. Schnucks is slated to be one of the project’s commercial anchors. Local coverage has tracked the project’s approvals and economic impact since the plans went public.
What Shoppers Will Get
Schnucks says the larger footprint will open the door for expanded produce, prepared foods and grocery departments, along with amenities the older store simply cannot fit. The company is framing the project as an upgrade to deliver a more modern and efficient shopping experience while broadening selection and services for Creve Coeur customers, according to Schnucks.
Next Steps
Creve Coeur’s capital plan already calls for median and landscaping work on Olive Boulevard at the Olia Village entrance. City planners say permit activity and infrastructure work tied to the development will keep moving as the commercial phases come online. Planning materials flag the new Schnucks as one of the earliest commercial pieces of Olia Village, so neighbors should expect steady construction activity on and around Olive Boulevard through 2027, according to Creve Coeur planning documents.
