A man from Nicosia, Cyprus has admitted in a St. Charles County courtroom that he killed a Lake Saint Louis resident in 2024, closing a grim case that started with a loose dog and unanswered calls. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the stabbing death that rattled the quiet suburban neighborhood.
Prosecutors said 46-year-old William T. Roberts pleaded guilty to the 2024 killing and received the 20-year sentence during a hearing in St. Charles County, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The outlet identified the victim as Joshua Reinhard.
At Home: The Crime Scene
When Lake Saint Louis police went to check on Reinhard after he could not be reached, they found a scene that officers later described in stark detail. Reinhard was dead inside his home, his torso partially inside a dog cage, with puncture wounds and blood visible in the area. Investigators also found the handle of a knife hidden under pillows, according to KMOV.
Reinhard's wife had been out of town at the time, and it was the couple's dog that first tipped neighbors off that something was wrong. Neighbors called police after spotting the dog roaming the neighborhood without anyone around, KMOV reported.
How Investigators Tracked Him Down
Once officers realized Reinhard's pickup truck was missing, investigators followed a trail of surveillance footage across multiple counties and states. That effort eventually led to Illinois, where Illinois State Police pulled the truck over near Joliet and arrested Roberts, who was behind the wheel, according to KMOV.
"My thoughts are with the victim's family during this difficult time," St. Charles County prosecutor Joseph McCulloch told the outlet, adding praise for the multiagency effort that brought Roberts into custody.
Sentence And Court Details
Roberts entered his guilty plea on Tuesday in St. Charles County, and the 20-year prison sentence was handed down at the same hearing, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Court documents show he admitted to stabbing Reinhard.
Prosecutors had originally charged Roberts with second-degree murder and first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle following his October 2024 arrest, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
It was not immediately clear whether any appeals or additional hearings are planned. The victim's family did not immediately comment.
