Fall River’s waterfront is about to get busy. Hundreds of people are expected to pack the Gates of the City on Ponta Delgada Boulevard this weekend for the Day of Portugal festival, with live bands and headliners taking over the shoreline for three straight nights. The event runs Friday through Sunday and will temporarily reshape traffic around the downtown waterfront with closures, detours and lots of pedestrians.
The Fall River Police Department has outlined how the city plans to handle the influx, noting that Ponta Delgada Boulevard will be closed between Anawan Street and the Water Street connector during festival hours and that officers will be stationed throughout the site to guide traffic and keep things safe, according to the Fall River Police Department. The same update says the city will run a free shuttle service on a continuous loop approximately every 2525 minutes from several downtown parking lots.
Parking, Shuttle and Detours
To cut down on congestion near the gates, the city is urging drivers to park at designated lots that double as shuttle stops, including Fall River Municipal Credit Union on Milliken Boulevard, T.A. Restaurant and Alexandra's on Morgan Street, 10 North Main Street and the Pearl Street parking garage, as reported by Fall River Reporter. Additional parking without shuttle service will be available at Santo Christo Credit Union, Chaves Market and the Work Out World lot on Anawan Street. Santo Christo Church will also open its lot for parking on Sunday only.
Entertainment Highlights
The main stage at the Gates of the City will stay busy. Entertainment includes Tony Borges & Banda Euro at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, DJ Rock the Mike at 6 p.m. on Friday and Bia Caboz at 9 p.m., with David Carreira taking the late-night slot on Saturday and Jose9 Malhoa closing out the weekend on Sunday, according to the Fall River Police Department. The lineup mixes local performers with Portuguese headliners and late-night DJ sets aimed at keeping the waterfront buzzing well into the evening. Set times can change, so organizers are telling festivalgoers to double-check for updates before heading out.
Business Access and Detour Routes
City officials are emphasizing that many waterfront businesses will remain open throughout the festivities, including Morgan's Cantina, Pier 52, the Tipsy Seagull and Stumpy's Hatchet House, according to Fall River Reporter. To reach Ferry Street while Ponta Delgada Boulevard is closed, drivers can follow detours using the Broadway Extension ramp to the Water Street connector, Columbia Street to Ponta Delgada Boulevard, or William Street to Almond Street. Police are asking motorists to follow posted signs, expect delays and stay patient as crews work around heavier foot traffic.
Day of Portugal runs this weekend (June 1214) and is expected to draw both family crowds and late-night revelers. Attendees are being encouraged to arrive early and make use of shuttle parking if they want to spend more time at the festival and less time circling for a spot.
