A burst of gunfire from a passing car ripped through a Chatham block Monday night, leaving a 20-year-old man dead and two others wounded, according to Chicago police. The attack unfolded around 10:44 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, when a black sedan pulled up and someone inside opened fire. One 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene, while a 19-year-old man and another 20-year-old man were hit in the leg and taken to hospitals in good condition.
The sedan sped off northbound on Cottage Grove Avenue and did not stop, police said. According to ABC7 Chicago, no arrests had been reported as of Tuesday morning. The outlet listed the victims as two 20-year-old men and a 19-year-old man and confirmed the two survivors were in good condition at local hospitals.
Investigation Underway
Area Two detectives are leading the probe, canvassing the block and nearby streets for witnesses and surveillance video that might help identify the vehicle or the shooter. Investigators were processing the scene late into the night. Police have not released any suspect description or motive as the case remains active.
Neighborhood Context
The latest shooting lands in the middle of a rough stretch for Chatham. A fatal stabbing on June 2 was reported on a neighborhood street, and an April alley shooting left a man wounded during what police said was a stickup. Earlier this month, CBS Chicago reported two men were shot while sitting in a car in Chatham on June 15.
Authorities are urging anyone with video, photos, or information about Monday night's drive-by to contact Chicago police as detectives work to piece together what led up to the late-night attack. This story will be updated as officials release more details.
