
A 24-year-old man was shot in the hand Thursday night during an attempted robbery in an alley in the 8000 block of South Drexel Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood. Police said the suspect came up behind the man in the alley, demanded his property, then fired a single shot before taking off. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

Chicago police told local reporters the attacker, described only as an unknown male armed with a handgun, approached the 24-year-old from behind, demanded his property and fired one shot before fleeing, as reported by WGN-TV. Neighborhood context
Chatham has seen a string of recent shootings and remains one of the South Side's most conflict-scarred neighborhoods. A 2024 analysis found Chatham had one of the city's highest shooting fatality rates, roughly one in three victims, according to Block Club Chicago, and Hoodline previously reported a deadly drive-by in the neighborhood earlier this year.
