A nighttime collision on a busy stretch of Highway 8 in Chisago City left one woman dead and another with life-threatening injuries Tuesday, shutting down the roadway as investigators combed the scene.
Crash details and victims
State troopers say the crash happened just after 8:30 p.m. near 270th Street, when two vehicles collided head-on on the two-lane highway. The impact brought emergency crews racing to the scene, and the highway was closed while responders worked and investigators documented the wreckage.
According to FOX 9, a 2003 Ford Ranger traveling east crossed the center line and slammed into a 2012 Nissan Murano coming the other way. The Minnesota State Patrol identified the Ranger's driver as 75-year-old Rebecca Mae Freedom of St. Croix Falls, Wis., who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Murano's driver, 65-year-old Jane Ogbonne Martins of Eagan, suffered life-threatening injuries.
The Minnesota State Patrol and the Chisago County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash, and troopers say the investigation remains active.
Highway 8 safety and planned upgrades
Highway 8 has been the focus of safety studies and planned reconstruction after a string of serious crashes, according to MnDOT. A corridor study for the Chisago City to Taylors Falls stretch details crash history and lays out proposed improvements aimed at reducing head-on collisions.
The county's project page through Chisago County notes that local officials have been holding public meetings this month as they weigh design options and potential safety upgrades along the route.
Investigation
The Minnesota State Patrol is leading the probe and has not yet released a cause for the crash, FOX 9 reports. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the State Patrol or the Chisago County Sheriff's Office as they continue gathering evidence.
Officials say the case remains open, and more details are expected as troopers review witness statements, crash reconstruction data, and any available video. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant footage is urged to reach out to investigators.
