A late-night shooting inside a downtown St. Louis loft building left one man dead Thursday, rattling residents in the historic Ely Walker Lofts and putting fresh scrutiny on safety in the Washington Avenue corridor.
Police: Homicide Investigation Underway
Officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the Ely Walker Lofts in the 1500 block of Washington Avenue shortly before 11:50 p.m., according to FOX2. They found a man on the building’s seventh floor near the elevators with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives launched an investigation and remained in the building into the night, processing the scene and beginning interviews with potential witnesses, police said. The department has not yet released the victim’s name or any information about a possible suspect.
Earlier Violence At Ely Walker
The Ely Walker Lofts at 1520 Washington Avenue are no stranger to tragedy. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s homicide tracker lists a separate fatal shooting at the same building in 2022. That earlier killing helped turn the property and the surrounding downtown loft district into a regular talking point in neighborhood debates over crime and security.
Residents and business owners have repeatedly raised concerns about how crowds and late-night activity in the area intersect with public safety, with some calling for tighter building security and a stronger law enforcement presence.
Rooftop Parties And Neighborhood Safety
Local coverage has tied some past violent confrontations in the broader downtown corridor to unsanctioned rooftop gatherings on Washington Avenue, which have become a recurring flashpoint in citywide safety discussions, as outlined in reporting on unsanctioned rooftop parties on Washington Avenue. Authorities are again asking the public for help here, urging anyone with information about the latest killing to contact the Homicide Division at 314-444-5371 or submit an anonymous tip to CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477).
What Investigators Want
Detectives are particularly interested in hearing from people who may have seen or heard anything on the seventh floor near the time of the shooting, or who have cell phone or security video from inside or around the building. FOX2 reports investigators stayed on scene into the morning, collecting evidence and canvassing for leads.
Police say the investigation remains active and that additional details will be released as they are confirmed.
