A man died after an e-bike crash on the outbound side of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge on Wednesday evening, authorities said. Emergency crews from the Metropolitan Police Department and the city’s Fire and EMS responded to the scene on South Capitol Street and took the rider to a nearby hospital.
According to WJLA, officers were dispatched to the outbound span after a report of an accident involving an e-bike. When they arrived, they found an unconscious man with traumatic injuries who was not breathing. Fire and EMS transported him to the hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead after lifesaving efforts failed. The Metropolitan Police Department told WJLA that no other vehicle was involved in the crash.
Investigation and Witness Appeal
MPD investigators said they are examining the circumstances of the collision and have not released the rider’s identity. Anyone who saw the crash or who may have video is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (202) 727-9099 or text 50411, per MPD.
E-Bike Safety and Local Trends
This collision is the latest high-profile e-bike incident in the region; in February a trash truck struck two people riding an e-bike in Petworth, killing one, according to NBC4. Bicycle advocates say more powerful e-bikes and gaps in protected infrastructure are contributing to an uptick in serious crashes. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association has urged faster buildout of protected bike lanes and stronger enforcement to reduce risks for riders and pedestrians; see WABA’s policy page for local priorities.
About the Bridge
The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge carries South Capitol Street across the Anacostia River and is the centerpiece of a multi-year corridor project that included new pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The bridge project website notes the reconstruction aimed to improve safety and neighborhood connections between the Capitol and communities east of the river; DDOT has described the corridor work as focused on safer, multimodal travel.
Police have not released any further information and say the investigation remains active. Hoodline will update this report as officials from MPD, Fire and EMS or DDOT release additional details.
