Clear skies over El Paso International Airport (KELP) early Friday, with temperatures sitting around 79°F at last observation, are setting the stage for a scorcher. By this afternoon (Friday, June 26), the city is expected to climb to around 102°F, with heat index readings topping out in the upper 90s in some neighborhoods. Afternoon drivers can expect hot, dry conditions, and residents are urged to keep a close watch on children, seniors, and pets.
Afternoon Heat And Brief Storm Chances
Mostly sunny skies and west-northwest winds of 2 to 9 mph will keep the lowlands baking through the afternoon, with humidity staying low. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between about 7 p.m. and midnight Friday night, mainly over higher terrain and in spots where outflow boundaries set up. Tonight's low should land near 77°F, with west-southwest winds gusting to around 18 mph. Any storms that do fire could bring brief heavy rain, gusty winds and pockets of localized blowing dust.
Weekend Wind And Fire Risk
Winds are expected to kick up this weekend, with sustained speeds around 10 to 20 mph and gusts pushing into the 20s. The air will stay very dry, and that combo of low humidity and stronger winds is raising near-critical to critical fire-weather concerns for neighboring southwest New Mexico, according to the National Weather Service El Paso. Borderland residents should plan for a breezy Saturday and Sunday and keep an eye on updated local forecasts.
Cooling Centers And What To Do
The City has opened cooling centers at recreation centers and libraries for anyone needing air-conditioned relief. Locations and hours are available from the City of El Paso. If you have to be outside, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade, and schedule strenuous work for early morning or evening hours. Residents can call 2-1-1 for help with fans or shelter referrals, and should dial 9-1-1 for any heat-related emergencies.
