A motorcyclist was killed Monday in a collision with an SUV on a rural stretch south of Hillsboro, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to the crash and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the collision remains under investigation.
The crash happened near the intersection of SW Scholls Ferry Road and SW Hillsboro Highway, according to KOIN. Investigators stayed on scene as they worked to piece together what led up to the impact. KOIN reported that the sheriff's office did not immediately release the rider's identity or other identifying details.
Motorcycle Fatalities Remain High
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported more than 6,200 motorcyclist deaths in 2024 and said riders were many times more likely than passenger-vehicle occupants to die per mile traveled, according to NHTSA. Those national trends highlight how exposed riders are on rural and arterial roads, where roadside hazards and higher speeds can quickly turn bad luck into a deadly outcome. Safety officials point to helmet use, impairment and speeding as leading factors in many fatal motorcycle crashes.
Investigation Underway
The Washington County Sheriff's Office told KOIN that deputies are actively investigating the collision and that additional details will be released when available. The office has not yet released the rider's name or said whether any charges might follow. Crash investigators typically rely on witness interviews, vehicle positions and any available camera footage as they reconstruct what happened.
This story will be updated if the Washington County Sheriff's Office or other agencies release more information. Authorities often issue follow-up media releases, and local outlets are expected to carry updates as they come out.
