A quiet afternoon at a Forest Hills playground turned frightening on Monday when a man walked up to a 6-year-old boy and hit him in the head in what police are calling an unprovoked attack. The child was taken to a nearby hospital, and his mother captured the encounter on her cellphone, footage that investigators are now sharing as they ask the public to help track the man down.
According to the New York Daily News, the incident unfolded inside the community playground attached to P.S. 144 on Kessel Street near 70th Avenue in Forest Hills, Queens. The boy’s mother turned her recording over to police, who then released a portion of the cellphone video as part of the active investigation.
NYPD detectives said no arrests have been made. They are asking anyone with information or video to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit a tip online through the department’s Crime Stoppers portal. Investigators emphasized that even short clips or still images can help move the case forward.
What the footage shows
The cellphone clip released by police appears to show a man approach the child and strike him before walking off, as reported by the New York Daily News. Detectives have not publicly discussed a motive, and they have shared few details about the boy’s condition beyond confirming that he was taken to an area hospital.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have captured any part of the encounter on doorbell cameras, joggers’ phones or other devices to send what they have to investigators. Even footage before or after the moment of the assault could help identify the suspect or trace his movements.
Citywide context and concerns
The Forest Hills incident is landing in a city already on edge over safety in playgrounds and parks, after a run of cases in which children and teens have been targeted in public spaces. Hoodline recently detailed a Brooklyn case involving a choking 7-year-old in a Red Hook playground, where police similarly turned to the public to help identify a man wanted in connection with that attack. Episodes like these tend to ripple quickly through neighborhoods, rattling parents and caregivers.
Detectives say the Forest Hills investigation remains active, and they plan to pursue all credible leads. Anyone with information, images or video related to the P.S. 144 playground assault is asked to call 1-800-577-TIPS or send details through the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers portal.
