A quiet stretch of Chicago's Austin neighborhood turned into a crime scene Saturday when a 34-year-old man was found shot to death on the city’s West Side, authorities said.
Officers responding to a call found the man with a gunshot wound to his chest in the 1100 block of North Latrobe Avenue, according to Chicago police. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Detectives said the case remains under active investigation and no arrests have been announced.
Area Four detectives told reporters they had spoken with a person of interest while canvassing the block, according to WGN-TV. Investigators are now leaning heavily on surveillance footage and community tips to piece together what happened.
Police are urging anyone with information or time-stamped video from the area to submit tips at CPDTip.com.
How to help investigators
Detectives in Area Four want to hear from neighbors who may have seen or heard anything around the time of the shooting, or who have cameras facing the street.
People with information can call Area Four detectives at 312-746-8251. That number is the standard contact for Area Four investigations, as cited by FOX 32 Chicago. Police have specifically asked residents to check doorbell and security cameras and to save any footage that might help the investigation.
A neighborhood under strain
The shooting adds to a string of gun violence that has kept many Austin residents on edge. Earlier this year, in January, a 17-year-old was shot while sitting in a car on North Latrobe Avenue, according to 17-Year-Old Shot on N. Latrobe.
Detectives say the latest killing is still under active investigation and that more details will be released as they become available. In the meantime, anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant footage is urged to contact investigators.
