
Gunfire tore through the Castalia Heights neighborhood Tuesday evening, leaving one person dead and another in a hospital bed fighting to survive.
Officers were called to the corner of East Person Avenue and Castalia Street around 5:30 p.m., where they found two shooting victims. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Memphis police have not released the victims' names or any public description of a suspect.
Police told Action News 5 the shooting was reported at about 5:30 p.m., and investigators believe a possible suspect was known to the victims. Homicide detectives stayed on the scene into the evening as officers knocked on doors and searched the area for witnesses and evidence.

Castalia Heights has seen several shootings in recent months, and residents say the steady drumbeat of violence has them thinking twice about even daytime trips through the neighborhood. Previous deadly gunfire in Castalia Heights has included both fatal and nonfatal incidents, underscoring long-standing safety concerns.
