After years of debate, design work and construction dust, Saint Paul’s Hamline Midway Library is finally back. The rebuilt branch will officially reopen to the public on Saturday, July 18, with a family-friendly grand-opening celebration that brings music, food and activities to the neighborhood. Visitors will get a first look at the renovated space, new public art and sustainability upgrades, as library staff and community partners work to reconnect neighbors with a long-anticipated community hub.
Grand Opening Details
A City of Saint Paul Facebook post lays out the plan for the big day, stating that the grand-opening celebration kicks off at 10:30 a.m. and that the library will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on July 18. According to the post, music, food and activities will be part of the festivities, and the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library will be on hand to help welcome visitors.
Art, Sustainability and the New Space
Saint Paul Public Library notes that the rebuilt Hamline Midway branch features public art, accessible design and sustainability elements, while staff move materials into the building as final commissioning work wraps up. The project is part of SPPL’s Transforming Libraries initiative, which secured public investment to modernize neighborhood branches and bolster community programming.
Long Time Coming
A court battle and community debate over the Midway rebuild slowed the project, but approvals and funding eventually cleared the way for the replacement. City officials and library advocates say the new single-story layout is intended to improve accessibility and create a more flexible space for neighborhood gatherings, events and day-to-day use.
What to Know Before You Go
The new library’s street address is 1558 W Minnehaha Ave in Saint Paul’s Hamline Midway neighborhood, according to Saint Paul Public Library. Visitors are encouraged to check the library’s web pages for the latest details on hours, programming and transit or parking information ahead of the July 18 celebration.
