Waiʻānapanapa State Park, home to Hāna’s famous black-sand shoreline, is about to trade in a bit of its rugged charm for some much-needed upgrades. The state says construction kicks off Saturday, July 6, bringing a new comfort station near the eastern parking lot and a full resurfacing of Honokalani Road. The restroom is slated to wrap this fall, while the road work is projected to finish in early 2027. In the meantime, visitors can expect shifting parking plans, temporary closures and a pause on campervan camping while crews are on site.
Construction timeline and what’s being built
The Division of State Parks has set July 6 as the official start of construction. The project calls for a new comfort station next to the eastern parking area, along with a multi-year overhaul of Honokalani Road, with the restroom targeted for completion this fall and the road improvements planned through early 2027, according to Maui Now. State Parks acting administrator Alan Carpenter said, "The uniqueness of the natural and cultural environment of Waiʻānapanapa State Park makes it a visitor hot spot drawing large crowds throughout the year."
Road work, closures and resident access
The planned road work is not just a quick patch job. The resurfacing will run the full stretch of Honokalani Road from Hāna Highway to the park entrance, with targeted widenings, new signage, speed bumps and pavement repairs, according to the Maui County Planning Commission. The record notes there will be roughly a three-week window when both the park and Honokalani Road must be closed to complete the resurfacing. Residents along the road, however, are expected to retain access throughout the project. Engineers also plan several small pavement widenings to make two-way passing less nerve-racking at tight spots, and aging signs will be replaced to improve safety.
Parking, camping and reservation impacts
To keep the work zone from turning into a traffic snarl, the Division of State Parks will shut down the eastern day-use and tour-bus parking area for the duration of construction and route all beach access through the western park entrance. Campervan camping will be temporarily suspended, with the campervan lot reassigned for day-use visitors and tent campers. Refunds have already gone out to people holding campervan reservations for June, according to Maui Now. Park officials say some short, targeted park closures may be necessary during road work, but they plan to maintain access for residents and emergency services as much as possible. Anyone with existing reservations is urged to check the state reservation system for updates before heading out.
Community concerns and cultural protections
Not everyone is thrilled about putting new concrete and plumbing near such a storied landscape. Lineal descendants and local residents told planners they were worried about the comfort station’s proximity to private cemeteries and other cultural sites, and they pushed for archaeological monitoring and designs that blend into the surroundings, according to the Maui County Planning Commission. The planning record notes that State Parks intends to install an upgraded septic and leach-field system and is weighing aerobic pretreatment to reduce environmental impacts, with the Department of Health reviewing the wastewater plans. Commissioners also added conditions on visual treatments and fencing to help shield the park’s historic features from intrusive views.
