A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Mazda SUV on northbound Highway 101 just south of Whipple Road in Redwood City yesterday, according to authorities. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, and all northbound lanes were shut down for about an hour while investigators worked on the freeway.
California Highway Patrol officers said the pedestrian had been walking and running in the lanes before being hit, according to KRON4. The Mazda’s driver was not reported injured, and the northbound lanes have since reopened.
Why the Whipple Crossing Matters

The cause of the crash remains unclear, and CHP investigators were still working at the scene, KRON4 reported. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and additional details have not been released.
This story will be updated if authorities release more information. Motorists may see occasional delays on the northbound 101 near Whipple while investigators remain active in the area.
