Hilary Knight, the 36-year-old captain of the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team and one of the sport's most recognizable stars, is heading to the PWHL's new Detroit franchise in a sign-and-trade from Las Vegas, according to people familiar with the arrangement. The move instantly hands Detroit a marquee veteran leader just as the league puts the finishing touches on rosters ahead of its mid-June draft festivities.
According to The Associated Press, Knight will first sign a foundational contract with Las Vegas during Phase 2 of the PWHL expansion signings. As part of the pre-arranged deal, Las Vegas has agreed to flip her to Detroit in exchange for the expansion club's first-round pick. The person who described the arrangement did so on condition of anonymity, since the trade cannot become official until the league's trade freeze lifts on June 16.
Detroit's expansion build
PWHL Detroit has already been busy assembling an inaugural core. The club used its foundational offer earlier this month on forward Daryl Watts, then signed Britta Curl-Salemme, Hannah Bilka and Cayla Barnes, and added Jesse Compher to round out its Phase 2 group. ClickOnDetroit notes that the expansion roster is quickly stacking up with proven international talent. As outlined by the PWHL, Detroit will play home games at Little Caesars Arena and is set to host the PWHL Awards on June 16 and the Draft at the Fox Theatre on June 17 as part of its splashy debut.
Knight's resume
Knight is a five-time U.S. Olympian who captained Team USA to gold at the Milan-Cortina Games, deflecting the championship-tying goal late in regulation of an overtime win over Canada and setting U.S. Olympic career records for goals and points in the process. She finished last PWHL season with five goals and 14 points in 22 games, even after missing the final two months with a lower-body injury. A foundational offer guarantees at least $100,000 per season, The Associated Press reported.
What's next
The calendar is tight: with the league's trade freeze scheduled to lift June 16 and the draft slated for June 17, the transaction is positioned to be finalized in a narrow window that could reshape how both expansion teams approach their draft boards. Detroit secures an established scorer and locker-room voice up front, while Las Vegas gets a valuable first-round selection to jump-start its own roster build. Fans looking to map out their summer hockey plans can find event and ticket details in the PWHL's official release.
