Kayma, the Algerian kitchen run by husband-and-wife team Wafa and Mounir Bahloul, has landed its own storefront in Fisherman's Wharf, serving what the couple and local outlets describe as the Bay Area’s first dedicated Algerian cuisine and pastry counter. The new spot graduates Kayma from roaming food truck and food hall kiosk to a compact counter-and-bakery where family recipes and North African spice blends set the tone. With Algeria playing in the World Cup this week, the Bahlouls say the shop is already pulling in fans who want familiar game day snacks along with something new.
As reported by KTVU, the owners see Kayma as an introduction for Bay Area diners to a culture that centers on hospitality, family, and gathering around the table. In today's feature that tied the opening to World Cup match-day buzz, the station highlighted both the savory counter and the pastry program, which the Bahlouls say draw on recipes passed down through generations. They told the station they hope hardcore fans and curious walk-ins alike can find a new favorite on the menu.
From La Cocina kiosk to Fisherman's Wharf storefront
Wafa and Mounir first launched Kayma through La Cocina’s entrepreneur program, starting out with a food truck and a municipal-market kiosk, according to Mission Local. They later moved into a stall at Saluhall downtown, a chapter that wrapped in March 2025 while they hunted for a permanent home, Eater San Francisco reported. The new brick-and-mortar finally gives them space for a full pastry case and a steadier counter menu that leans into the flavors they grew up eating.
What’s on the counter
Kayma’s menu pairs hearty North African mains with a pastry case that reflects both Algerian and French technique. The restaurant’s own menu lists couscous bowls, grilled merguez, dobara (spicy garbanzo beans) and a spread of housemade pastries and baklawa, according to the shop’s online menu. Local food newsletter Tablehopper has already called out spiced fries, sandwich rolls and pecan baklava as early crowd-pleasers.
Where to find it
The Fisherman’s Wharf storefront is listed as 2640 Mason St in online map listings for Kayma. The space is operating as a walk-up counter with takeout, and the business’s Apple Maps entry includes a phone number for orders and directions. Check the Apple Maps listing for current hours and the latest directions before you head over.
Why Kayma matters
The couple says Kayma, which is the Arabic word for a nomadic tent, is meant to evoke hospitality and shared meals, a philosophy laid out on the restaurant’s website. With a dedicated pastry case and savory bowls in one small shop, Kayma fills a gap for Algerian flavors that have been scarce on Bay Area menus and offers San Franciscans a fresh spot to explore North African sweets and staples.
