A routine check on a man behaving erratically at the Novato Fair Shopping Center turned into a tense showdown inside a Dollar Tree yesterday, ending with a Santa Rosa man in handcuffs after a roughly 20-minute standoff, police said. Officers reported that the man pointed a folding knife at an officer inside the store before ultimately dropping the weapon and surrendering. He was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a weapon, resisting officers, trespassing, and public intoxication.
Officer Encounter Inside Store Triggers Tense Standoff
A patrol officer first spotted the man acting erratically near the Novato Fair Shopping Center on Diablo Avenue and contacted him outside the Dollar Tree, according to The Press Democrat. Once inside the store, the suspect allegedly pulled out a folding knife and pointed it at the officer, prompting police to lock down the area and call for backup. The confrontation stretched to about 20 minutes before the man dropped the knife and surrendered, police said.
De-escalation Tactics and Past Standoffs
Novato officers have leaned on negotiation and containment in similar high-stress calls, aiming to talk things down before they spiral. In a separate 2023 incident, an axe-wielding suspect ended up without injuries after negotiators and multiple agencies coordinated on the scene, per Hoodline. The city’s police transparency pages lay out department policies and resources and encourage residents who may have relevant video or information to contact the department.
Who Was Arrested and What Comes Next
Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Joseph Morales of Santa Rosa and said he was booked on suspicion of brandishing a weapon, resisting police, trespassing and public intoxication, according to The Press Democrat. Authorities have not yet said whether prosecutors will file formal charges, and the investigation remains active.
