A 26-year-old man was killed late Sunday night when his car slammed into a concrete pillar on northbound Interstate 5 near Clairemont Drive, authorities said. The crash involved an Infiniti sedan and a Honda SUV and left people in the Honda with minor injuries. The Infiniti driver was rushed to a hospital with major injuries and later died.
According to FOX 5 San Diego, the wreck happened around 11:41 PM when the Infiniti rear-ended the Honda, then veered off the freeway and struck a concrete support beneath the Clairemont Drive overpass. Northbound lanes were shut down while first responders worked the scene and investigators documented the crash site.
Investigation Underway
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the events leading up to the collision, including the exact sequence of events. Toxicology tests are pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs played any role, officials said.
