An early-morning structure fire in Land Township, southwest of Alexandria, ended in tragedy Sunday when firefighters discovered a body inside a residence after knocking down the flames, officials said. The blaze was reported shortly after 1 a.m., and the scene remains under investigation.
Fire Reported Around 1 a.m.; Passing Deputy Pinpoints Scene
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, multiple callers reported a large fire in Land Township at about 1:05 a.m. Sunday. A Traverse County sheriff’s deputy who happened to be driving through the area provided an exact location and reported that a home and nearby structures were burning, FOX 9 reported.
Multiple Departments Respond as Home Fully Engulfed
Fire crews from Hoffman, Barrett, Kensington and Herman were among the agencies that responded to the call. Deputies learned a person might have been inside the home at the time of the blaze, according to KVRR. When firefighters arrived, the structures were already fully involved; crews eventually extinguished the fire, and investigators later found a body inside the residence.
Medical Examiner Working To Identify Victim; Cause Still Probed
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said the body was taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and to determine a cause of death. Officials noted that what led up to the fire remains under active investigation, and authorities had not released the victim’s identity as of Sunday evening, according to KVRR.
