Gas-station violence and citywide trends
Gun violence in Memphis remains concentrated in certain neighborhoods even as some national crime indicators show declines. Analysis by The Trace, which draws on Gun Violence Archive data, situates the city’s shootings within broader shifts in major city violence. Local advocates and police say convenience stores and late-night gas pumps often become flashpoints, citing heavy foot traffic, cash changing hands, and limited lighting.
