A deadly seven-vehicle pileup at a busy Lantana intersection tore a Mazda in half, left multiple cars crumpled, and turned the Tuesday afternoon commute into a nightmare along North Dixie Highway and East Ocean Avenue. Fire crews spent several tense minutes cutting victims from the wreckage, and two seriously injured people were airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center. One driver later died from their injuries, authorities said, as the crash forced a full shutdown of Dixie Highway in both directions and choked traffic across the small coastal town.
The scene and rescue
According to firefighters with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, seven vehicles were involved in the collision, with three people trapped inside the wreckage. It took roughly 10 minutes of heavy extrication work to free them, and two of the victims were flown by TraumaHawk to St. Mary's Medical Center, as reported by WPEC. Photos from the scene show at least a dozen first responders clustered around the destroyed Mazda, its rear section sheared off, while bystanders hovered nearby checking on shaken motorists.
A congested crossroads
The crash unfolded where East Ocean Avenue meets North Dixie Highway, a well-traveled route that funnels drivers between Lantana's waterfront and the rest of town. Town records note that the stretch of Ocean Avenue east of U.S. 1 is maintained by Palm Beach County, per the Town of Lantana. Locals say that combination of beachgoers and daily commuters routinely packs the intersection, which helps explain how a single collision there can quickly balloon into a multi-car mess and hours of gridlock.
Investigators and detours
An officer at the scene told reporters that while there are traffic cameras at the intersection, they are not monitored in real time, and investigators were still piecing together what led up to the violent chain-reaction crash, according to WPEC. Town officials urged southbound drivers to divert at Lantana Road and northbound traffic to turn off at West Pine Street while crews worked to clear the wreckage and document the scene. The name of the driver who died has not been released, as the investigation remains active.
