A Miami-Dade rideshare driver is facing a felony charge after authorities say he took off from a crash that left a motorcyclist fighting for his life, then surrendered days later.

The hit-and-run happened Saturday night at Northwest 103rd Street and 27th Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade, deputies said. The rider was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Osmany Castillo was making a left turn on Northwest 103rd Street when his 2011 Toyota Tundra struck the motorcyclist. Investigators say the truck dragged the rider’s 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3 under the pickup until the motorcycle finally dislodged.

A witness followed the Tundra, got the tag number and later pointed out the vehicle to investigators, who impounded the truck as evidence. Castillo turned himself in on Thursday and was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious bodily injury. Authorities say he provided a “full confession.” WPLG Local 10.

What the law says

Leaving the scene of a crash that causes serious bodily injury is a felony under Florida law and carries significantly tougher penalties than a hit-and-run involving only property damage. Under Florida Statutes §316.027, an offense involving serious bodily injury is treated as a second-degree felony. Sentences can vary based on the facts of the case and a defendant’s prior record, and prosecutors will decide whether to seek any enhanced penalties as the investigation moves forward.

Investigation and next steps

Detectives say the investigation is still active. Castillo’s truck remains impounded while investigators review the arrest report and witness statements to determine how the case will be charged in court. Deputies have not said whether Castillo was carrying a rideshare passenger at the time of the crash.

As of Friday afternoon, Castillo was still being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $15,000 bond. WPLG Local 10.
