Mid-City is about to lose one of its most reliable breakfast rituals. Wakin' Bakin', the cheerful Banks Street spot known for house sourdough, hefty breakfast bowls, and its signature “pancrepes,” says it will serve its last plates at the flagship location on July 15, 2026, after 15 years in the neighborhood. The owners thanked customers for the long run and emphasized that the French Quarter outpost will stay open.
Owners set final day on July 15
The closure news dropped on the restaurant’s social channels, where the team named July 15 as the Banks Street location’s last day and sent a heartfelt thank-you to regulars who kept the place humming over the years. As reported by NOLA.com, the post did not spell out a specific reason for the shutdown, but it did urge fans to get in while they still can before the final weekend.
From a pub back-kitchen to Banks Street staple
Wakin' Bakin' did not start with a full dining room and a line out the door. The business began as a takeout and delivery operation tucked into the back of the Holy Ground Irish Pub, before moving into the former Huevos space on Banks Street in 2013, according to Eater New Orleans. That move helped cement its status as a neighborhood favorite for breakfast burritos, sourdough sandwiches, and other morning standards.
French Quarter outpost will stay open
The owners also operate a French Quarter location at the corner of Dauphine and Dumaine. The Wakin' Bakin' site notes the business has served New Orleans since 2010 and lists the French Quarter address and menu offerings. NOLA.com reports the owners say that French Quarter shop will keep operating after Banks Street goes dark.
Closure comes amid a busy season for restaurants
The Banks Street shutdown lands in the middle of a particularly active stretch for the local dining scene, with new spots opening as others quietly call it a day. Axios New Orleans recently noted that the city had already logged several restaurant closures this season. Wakin' Bakin's exit is one more sign of churn among independent operators as they navigate a shifting industry landscape.
The owners have not outlined what might come next for the Banks Street space and have given no timetable for any possible return to the block. For current hours and the menu at the French Quarter location, visit the Wakin' Bakin' website.
