A Lufthansa flight from San Francisco to Munich made an unplanned landing at Boston Logan International Airport on Thursday morning after crew members and passengers restrained a traveler who allegedly attacked another passenger mid-flight. The person was reportedly handcuffed to their seat, and local authorities were waiting for the aircraft on arrival. After refueling, the plane resumed its journey to Munich later the same day.
Massachusetts State Police said they were notified around 8 a.m. Thursday about a disturbance on the flight and that a passenger allegedly attacked another traveler and had to be handcuffed to their seat. Troopers said they were not immediately sure if anyone had been injured and that the incident remains under investigation, according to NBC Boston.
Airline Statement and Flight Status
In a statement to NBC Boston, a Lufthansa spokesperson said the flight made an unscheduled stop "due to an unruly passenger who posed a threat to the safe continuation of the flight." The airline said Boston security authorities took the passenger into custody and removed the person's luggage from the aircraft. After refueling, the plane continued on to Munich with an estimated arrival time of 11:15 p.m. ET. The carrier said there were 508 passengers on board and that "the safety of all passengers and crew on board is always Lufthansa’s top priority."
FAA Rules and Trends
The Federal Aviation Administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy for unruly passenger behavior and can propose civil fines or refer the most serious cases to federal prosecutors. The agency's unruly passenger information page notes that incidents climbed sharply after 2021 and, while rates have dipped from that peak, there remains "more work to do," according to the FAA.
Logan Has Handled Similar Diversions
Serious in-flight violence has led to Logan diversions and federal charges in recent years. In October 2025, a Lufthansa flight was diverted to Logan after a passenger allegedly stabbed two teenagers, an episode that resulted in an arrest and federal prosecution, according to reporting by AP News.
Massachusetts State Police say the investigation into Thursday’s incident is ongoing and have not yet detailed whether charges will be filed. Passengers on the flight were reported to have continued on to Munich after the aircraft refueled, in line with the airline's statement.
