A late-night drive on Interstate 40 in Midtown Memphis turned deadly when a single car crashed near North McLean Boulevard, killing two men and leaving four other people fighting for their lives, police said.

Memphis police reported that officers were called to the scene at 11:55 p.m. Monday, where they found a heavily damaged vehicle and six occupants. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene, and four others were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition. Investigators have not yet released the victims’ identities or said how the group was connected.

According to Action News 5, a station crew arrived shortly after midnight to find a large police response and Memphis Fire Department units assisting at the site of the crash along I-40 and North McLean.

I-40 Safety and Recent Crashes

The late-night wreck adds to a troubling run of serious crashes on I-40 and other major Memphis roadways in recent years. In May 2024, a separate fatal wreck on the same interstate shut down traffic overnight, as previously detailed in Hoodline’s coverage of an earlier fatal I-40 wreck. That crash underscored the risks that can come with overnight driving on the busy corridor.

Investigation Ongoing

Memphis police say their crash-investigation unit is working to determine what led up to Monday night’s deadly collision. As of now, investigators have not publicly linked the crash to impairment, speeding, or any other specific cause. Officials have also not released the names of the two men killed or the four people critically injured, and no further updates were immediately available, according to Action News 5.

Authorities have not provided additional details about the victims or the circumstances of the crash. We will update this post as MPD and hospital officials release more information.
