A normally quiet stretch of Milton Drive turned into a crime scene Monday morning when a woman was killed and a man was wounded in a shooting inside an Alton home, authorities said. Officers arrived just before 8 a.m. and found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Police have not yet released their names.
According to First Alert 4, officers were called to the home along Milton Drive, near Milton Road, at about 7:57 a.m. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment. Alton Police said early findings indicate the people involved knew each other, and investigators do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the wider public.
Investigations and Local Context
The deadly shooting lands in the middle of a tense stretch for the Riverbend area when it comes to gun violence. In April, charges were filed after a shots-fired incident on East 4th Street that relied heavily on surveillance cameras and license-plate reader data, as reported by RiverBender. That earlier case underscored how local police are increasingly leaning on technology and camera networks to track suspects and piece together timelines.
Police Seeking Tips
The Alton Police Department is asking anyone with information about Monday’s shooting to call 618-463-3505, extension 634, according to First Alert 4. The department’s main office, located at 1700 E. Broadway, can also be reached through the city’s official listings for the Alton Police Department.
Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and are urging residents who may have surveillance footage, cellphone video or other tips to come forward, even if they think what they saw was minor.
