A quiet Sunday morning in downtown Atlanta turned into a crime scene when officers found the body of a 50-year-old woman near Auburn Avenue NE and Courtland Street NE, prompting a large police response and road closures in the heart of the city.
The Fulton County medical examiner confirmed the woman’s age as 50 but is withholding her name until next of kin can be notified. Police kept the intersection of Auburn Avenue NE and Courtland Street NE blocked off for hours while investigators examined the area, and Georgia State Patrol units were also seen nearby, including around Georgia State University's Centennial Hall. Authorities have not said whether a vehicle was involved in the woman’s death or if anyone is in custody, according to Atlanta News First.
"The vehicle had writing on its sides, including a message showing support for DR Congo," Atlanta News First reported. The DR Congo national team had played Uzbekistan at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday as part of the FIFA World Cup, bringing heavy foot traffic and crowds downtown, coverage that included the fan activity around the stadium was provided by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
