Drivers near Lavonia got an unexpected sight Thursday morning when deputies say a naked man took off running toward Interstate 85 near Neal Road in Franklin County. According to the sheriff’s office, he bolted into the woods heading for the interstate before officers tracked him down on I‑85 and took him into custody. He was then taken to Saint Mary's Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia for evaluation, authorities said.
How deputies say the arrest unfolded
According to CBS Atlanta, deputies identified the man as Jacob Southall of Gastonia, North Carolina. When deputies first arrived near Neal Road, they say Southall was naked and ran into the woods toward the interstate. Other responding officers reported finding him on I‑85, where they detained him, placed him under arrest and transported him to the hospital for evaluation.
Deputies told CBS Atlanta that Southall faces charges of obstructing an officer and public indecency. The sheriff’s office said it is prioritizing treatment for what it called "obvious mental illness" and urged anyone in crisis, or with a loved one who needs help, to call 988 for treatment options.
