What started as a planned pre-dawn fight in a Naperville grocery store parking lot ended with three 19-year-olds in custody and two guns in police hands, after officers say a confrontation between young adults turned into an armed robbery.
According to police, two women went to the parking lot of a west-side Jewel-Osco early Thursday to settle a dispute. Instead, investigators say, they were robbed at gunpoint, battered, and stripped of personal items, including a backpack that held a handgun. Officers later arrested all three men suspected in the holdup and reported recovering both the stolen firearm and the gun allegedly used in the crime. Each defendant now faces multiple felony counts.
What investigators say
Per a news release from the Naperville Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of West Ogden Avenue just after 4 a.m. Thursday for a report of an armed robbery.
Investigators say the two women had arranged to meet one of the men in the parking lot for a fight. When they showed up, two other suspects allegedly displayed a handgun, attacked one of the women, and took the victims’ belongings, including a backpack that contained a firearm.
Arrests and evidence
Officers located Tyrell Mays a short time later as he tried to leave the area in a ride-share vehicle. Police say he was carrying the stolen firearm when they stopped him.
Detectives then executed a search warrant at a residence on the 700 block of Violet Circle and arrested Jalen Green and Davyon Toney. Investigators recovered the handgun allegedly used in the robbery, along with additional property believed to have been taken from the victims, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Alleged motive and exchanges
Detention petitions filed by DuPage County prosecutors, and detailed by the Daily Herald, say Mays had a romantic interest in one of the women and that the confrontation was arranged after a FaceTime conversation.
Prosecutors also allege that after the incident, Mays called one of the victims and offered to return her FOID card. According to the petitions, he allegedly said he would give back her wallet only if she paid $250.
Charges and next steps
The Naperville Police Department reports that Mays, Green and Toney, all 19, were each charged with two counts of Armed Robbery with a Firearm, a Class X felony, and one count of Mob Action, a Class 4 felony. Green and Toney also face two counts of Aggravated Battery.
A judge ordered all three men held in jail and set their next court date for July 13.
Police comment
“Violent crimes such as armed robbery have no place in our community,” Police Chief Jason Arres said, praising the work of officers and detectives who tracked down the suspects. The department also emphasized that the charges are accusations and that all three men are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago.
Police are still interested in hearing from anyone who may have more information about the case, including video or eyewitness accounts.
